Documate August 2023: Interactive external content, Code snippets & Tables

We’ve spent the summer making Documate your team’s single source of truth by bringing your external content to your documentation.

From embedding Figma designs and YouTube videos to organising data in tables, these updates mean less jumping between tools and more time spent creating documentation that actually gets used.

We’ve also polished the editing experience with cleaner interfaces and smarter command organisation.

Embed external content directly in your documentation

Your documentation can now include rich external content without sending readers elsewhere. Adding Figma designs, YouTube videos, and images is now as simple as typing a slash command.

Use /youtube for videos, /figma for designs, or /image for pictures, then paste your link. The content becomes a fully interactive element that your team can engage with directly in your documentation.

💡 Pro tip: Use embedded Figma designs alongside written specifications so developers can see exactly what they’re building without switching between tools.

Code blocks for technical documentation

Technical documentation deserves proper code presentation. Our new code block feature ensures your code snippets remain readable and properly formatted, making it easier for developers to understand and copy implementation details.

Whether you’re documenting APIs, configuration steps, or troubleshooting scripts, your code now displays with the clarity it deserves.

💡 Pro tip: Combine code blocks with embedded images of expected outputs to create complete implementation guides that reduce support requests.

Tables for structured information

Sometimes information works best in rows and columns.

The new table block help readers scan feature comparisons, configuration options, or process workflows and find exactly what they need without wading through paragraphs of text.

💡 Pro tip: Use tables for documenting user permissions, feature matrices, or troubleshooting guides—they’re perfect for reference material that gets revisited frequently.

A few more improvements

⌨️ Commands: Commands are now grouped into logical sections, making it faster to find the right tool for your content.

🎨 Typography: Refined font styles throughout the application for better readability.

📱 Navigation: Clicking on comments no longer hides the top navigation when scrolling.

🔧 Reliability: Fixed several behind-the-scenes issues that were causing trouble when running AI commands.

🎯 Interface: Removed unnecessary visual clutter from the editor for a cleaner workspace.

What’s next?

The embed options you see today are just the beginning. We know different teams use different tools, and we’re committed to meeting those needs with more integrations on the way.
